Small Beginnings: Kevin Spacey

Small Beginnings is looking at one of the best known actors today who celebrated his 56th birthday recently. This year he is active for 30 years in film and theater! Let’s take a closer look how he got there.

Kevin Spacey Fowler was born on July 26 1959 in South Orange in New Jersey. His family moved to California when he was 4. He studied drama in New York and had success as a stand-up comedian. He took Spacey as his stage name (after his middle name and his grandmother’s maiden name). After a few years rewarding years in theatre productions he moved to film in 1986 and starred in several TV series, earning him a Tony Award in 1991.

He became known as a character actor and gained success through his roles in Swimming with Sharks and The Usual Suspects, which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for, followed by more nominations and awards like the Best Actor for American Beauty. With Beyond the Sea Spacey fulfilled a lifelong dream of his to co-write, direct and co-produce the biography about Bobby Darin.

2003 he returned to his old love of theater and became the artistic director of the Old Vic, an old theater in London. In 2011 Spacey was announced cast as Frank Underwood in the Netflix series House of Cards.

We wish Kevin Spacey all the best for his career and personal life and are proud of him for following his dreams with such passion.

Over the years, I’ve been trying to build a relationship with an audience.

I’ve tried to maintain as much of a low profile as I could so that those characters would emerge
and their relationship with audiences would be protected.
