When Meeting a Celebrity…

Celebrities are just regular people like you and I, but when we meet them many of us simply can’t help but get star struck. There is something strange and interesting about encounters between celebrities and us “common” folk.

In light of Tom Hanks “crashing” a wedding photo shoot recently, I wanted to gather other stories of fun and strange celebrity interactions.

These are stories gathered from Askreddit.com and various publications on entertainment websites. Whether they all are 100% true is hard to say, but they are interesting and worth a read!

  1. “No one will ever believe you!” – Bill Murray

There are plenty of stories circulating about Bill Murray pranking people, ranking from putting people in headlocks for fun, stealing pizzas, conducting bands, crashing wedding photo shoots and many more. Most of them end with him walking away saying; “No one will ever believe you!” It is very likely that these stories are a mix of urban legends and actual encounters.

Imagine walking into a bar and being greeted by Bill Murray from behind the counter…this actually happened In 2010 at the South by Southwest Festivals in Austin. He walked into a bar, somehow got behind the counter and started serving people drinks. Although he seemed to do a decent job at bartending, he would only serve people tequila regardless of what they ordered.
Have a look at the footage from this strange celebrity encounter here:

  1. Alan Rickman is Awesome

Sometimes we hear stories of how disappointing it can be to meet your idol. I’m sure this person was not disappointed with their encounter with their personal idol; Alan Rickman. This is their story:

“I met Alan Rickman as he was going into the stage door of the theater for a broadway show seminar. He was walking past me and I quickly blurted out, “I think you’re awesome!” He stopped, turned slowly towards me, extended a hand to shake mine, raised one eyebrow, and said,

It was awesome”

  1. “Easy on the bacon young man” – Arnold Schwarzenegger

Throughout the years Arnie has delivered many interesting lines both in his movies and in real life ranging from; “It’s simple, if it jiggles, it’s fat.” to “I just use my muscles as a conversation piece” and many more. This story from the perspective of a 10 year old kid also has a decent one liner:

“When I was about 10, I was in Chef Mickey’s at Disney World. I had about 20 strips of bacon on my plate when a voice from behind me said; “Easy on the bacon, young man” and there was Arnold Schwarzenegger. I told him he was The Terminator and he laughed and signed my arm.”

  1. “You look like Gerard Butler”

Sometimes all you get is an autograph. Other times you may end up having a genuine conversation about life with a celebrity. Here is a story of a fun encounter leading to a genuine conversation:

“One time I was in a Subway in Orem, UT and Gerard Butler walked up behind me. I looked at him, he smiled at me, and then we both pretended that he wasn’t himself. I said; “You look like Gerard Butler, he’s one of my favorite actors.” He said; “I get that a lot,” and winked.

Then he asked; “Well, are you a true fan of his?” And I said; “Of course!” He then asked if I knew what he used to do and I replied with, “He used to be a lawyer, before giving that up to pursue acting,” and then we spent the next twenty minutes discussing law, politics, and why someone would give up a successful career in law. Then, we shook hands and parted ways.”

  1. “Hey did you just see Robin Williams?”

Robin Williams has always been known as a comedic person on screen and in interviews. Although no one is funny all the time, there are plenty of stories of him pranking and messing with people for fun. Here is one of them:

“A friend of mine was at Costco shopping for a party when she looked across the aisle and swore she saw Robin Williams. She poked her friend and said “I think I just saw Robin Williams.” They looked around, but couldn’t find him to confirm it.

They shrugged it off and got in line to pay. A few moments later, out of the corner of her eye she saw a familiar bearded, starry-eyed man. She turned to get her friend’s attention again and tell her to look, but when she looked back, he was gone.

Dejected, she kept moving forward in line and then a man tapped her on the shoulder and said; “Hey did you just see Robin Williams too?!” She spun around to share her experience with the only other person who had seen him; “Yes! I keep tr…” and who else but Robin Williams was behind her!”

  1. “We totally rode the E.T. ride with Steven Spielberg.”

Most people do not know the faces of the people who direct the movies they watch, but few directors (if any) are as famous and recognizable as Steven Spielberg. Many actors and filmmakers speak of his kind nature on set, but here is a story of his friendly character offset;

“When I was in high school, we took a band trip to perform at a competition they held at Disney World. We went over to Universal Studios while we were there, and one of the guys I was with suddenly said; “OMG, that’s Steven Spielberg.” But no one believed him, so he ran over and dragged the poor guy back to our group, and he did indeed introduce himself as Steven Spielberg. He seemed like a perfectly average guy. He told us he was there to try out the E.T. ride, and asked us to come along. So we totally rode the E.T. ride with Steven Spielberg. Too groovy.”

  1. “Help us mutiny.” Captain Jack Sparrow comes to the rescue

When Johnny Depp was filming the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie in south-east London, 9 year old Beatrice Delap wrote to the star asking for help staging a ‘mutiny’ against the teachers at her school. She described herself and her fellow students as budding pirates in need of help.

As they were filming at a location nearby he decided to show up to the school in full costume as Captain Jack Sparrow. This caused great joy among the children and especially young Beatrice, whom he asked to see so he could give her a hug.

When asked about the unique encounter in an interview later on she said; ‘He gave me a hug and he said, “Maybe we shouldn’t mutiny today ‘cos there are police outside monitoring me.”’

Who wouldn’t want to mutiny with Captain Jack Sparrow!
