Becoming a Star

“I have to sell all these different emotions and lifestyles, but at the end of the day I still have to stay true to myself.”

“Quiet on set!” is called out and all the fast paced commotion of the film set becomes still. Carlin Sterritt lays down on the forest floor waiting for the Director to call out action. The camera is rolling, the lighting is set, everything from this point forward is all on him.

“I was doing a bit of modelling and my agency asked, have you thought about acting?” Carlin says to me sitting outside of the set; inside everyone rushes around to get everything set up for the shoot, to get everything set up for him. “I always wanted to be an actor when I was younger, but never really thought twice about it when I grew up. I just sorta took the opportunity with both hands and started taking any job I could.” Carlin’s playing the part of Will Denovan, the leading character in The Out of the Woods Project. He’s a genuinely nice and down to earth guy who’s taking on the challenge of acting in his first feature film.

Looking at actors in movies and television, sometimes all we see are the flashing lights and the larger than life celebrities, it’s easy to forget about the real people underneath. Acting isn’t the glamorous job we all make it out to be, it’s an emotionally and physically demanding job that requires you to literally become someone else and it’s something that you can easily lose yourself in.

I’m trying to become this other character, but it still has to be me.” Carlin tells me, he’s spent the last two and a half weeks working long twelve hour shooting days through the mud and the rain of the woods in order to become Will Denovan, a man desperate to get back to his family. “I have to sell all these different emotions and lifestyles, but at the end of the day I still have to stay true to myself. It’s a vulnerable place to be, getting into a mindset and an emotion that you might not have truly experienced before. I’ve had a pretty easy upbringing so really tapping into some emotions that I haven’t tapped into before has been really interesting, selling a specific emotion that I haven’t experienced before has been different. I was really looking forward to working with Jason because I’ve heard that he’s really good at getting his direction across and inspiring the actor to be come the character.”

As an actor there’s a long road of obstacles that you face in order to make it into an impossible field. Having to face rejection and have doors closed on you when auditioning is a harsh reality of the job, as well as knowing there might not always be a paycheque coming in.

“I think that every actor needs to find that balance of being able to live but also be able to pursue their dream career without finances being a hindrance, it’s a very odd balance that you need to find. You talk to any actor and they’ll tell you it’s a big struggle for them, a lot of actors now are still working part time jobs, but need to have flexibility to pursue their dream.

“I would say that besides all the struggles and obstacles, having the opportunity to use my craft, my passion and my gifts makes it all worth it! Working on The Out of the Woods Project has been great. Everyone’s great at what they do and they’ve really inspired me. It’s a special project and I think everyone on board knows it.”
