The creative process is a tough one, especially when you’re trying to be innovative, so you need all the inspiration you can get.
The first time I saw J.J. Abrams’ TED Talks, The Mystery Box, I was blown away. At first, I was annoyed by the mystery box and the fact he’s never opened it. The explorer in me wanted him to open the box.
The more I watch this vid, the more I understand how precious mystery is to telling a powerful story. It helps people develop the story for themselves and opens it up for more people to take something away from the story that may have never been intentional.
I also loved the stories he told in this clip. Especially when it comes to obstacles. He looks at them through a lens of an opportunity to find a solution versus being crippled by it. This to me is what sets filmmakers apart from those who just dream of being a filmmaker.
All in all, it inspired me to keep pushing my creativity. To not settle for second best and to look at obstacles as opportunities. It’s all part of the journey right?
Obstacles are opportunities for dreamers to be innovative in their art.
