The cinematography of Villeneuve’s work reflects how he views film. According to the video’s opening line, he sees it as an opportunity to ask questions and weave stories which will stick with you for days and weeks.
He is able to use mystery in his films to tell a more compelling narrative through elements of mystery and his use of the camera. Villeneuve is able to “invest the audience” in his work through showing just enough information, but not too much.
The narrator puts it best by saying if Villeneuve showed the audience everything they needed to know, then there would be closure. But by only showing part of the truth, he allows the viewer’s imagination to take over and fill in the gaps. Which is brilliant filmmaking.
The way he tells story is what every filmmaker should aspire to do in their own way. It may very well be said no other director knows how to make movies with mystery as well as Villeneuve does.
