In a world full of innovative creatives, why oh why are we doing so many freaking remakes? Do we need them?
Last year was no different, there were a score of old stories churned out with new casts like Flatliners and Jumanji. Now this year we’ve got several more including Overboard and Tomb Raider.
While I’ve never been a huge fan of the Lara Croft story, with actress Alicia Vikander and a pretty killer trailer, I think this remake has the potential of being a successful reboot. What do you think?
Overboard was one of my favourite films growing up. I constantly quoted the scene where the kids all gather around Goldie Hawn’s character while she mumbles, “Bha ba ba ba …” I’m not sure what I think of it being turned into a remake, but I appreciate they at least are trying to put a spin on it by flipping who gets amnesia. And besides, Anna Faris is pretty funny.
How do you think this one compares with the original?
These are only two of the long list of remakes slated for 2018. OThers include Hellboy – while I loved the original I’m intrigued by Stranger Things’s Hopper as Hellboy – The Jungle Book (come on, again?!), and several classic Disney remakes of animated movies, including Aladdin, which are being turned into live action films.
So what do you think? Do we want to see these and more? Or should we give room to the independent filmmakers of the world and create something new?
