When we think about independent filmmakers, what comes to mind? Artsy and tasteful? Big egos with no money? How about internet scammer? Online YouTuber, Adam Grumbo certainly didn’t think so, until he took advantage of a very unique situation.
Grumbo gave an internet scammer the chance of being a documentary filmmaker after receiving an email from the scammer, claiming to be a woman from Denver, when in reality he was a man named, Tobi from Nigeria.
Grumbo told Tobi he would pay him money in exchange for videos, pictures, and stories that captured his everyday life. What Grumbo got back absolutely amazed him.
Tobi sent back simple iPhone clips of his house, village, markets, what he ate, and selfie videos describing the hardships and joys of living in Nigeria. The footage shows a world vastly different than the western world, and along with the commentary from Tobi, shows the hardships faced there.
Grumbo started a GoFundMe page for Tobi to continue electrical engineering school, as well cellular data fees so he can send Grumbo the video clips. Almost 80 people raised over $1,000USD in just six days for Tobi.
Grumbo and Tobi’s encounter is an incredible reminder it doesn’t take expensive cameras and million dollar budgets to create inspirational content, it just takes a community of individuals to get behind something and see it thrive.
“We’ve got a lot of different things happening. People living in different ways. The poor live like the poor and the rich live like the rich.” -Tobi
