If you liked Shape of Water because it was creative, different and kinda weird, these movies might be right up your alley for when you’re in one of those “Movies are all the same” moods. For this list I’ll be starting off with relatively known films and go more obscure the further down the list. Here are the films you need for your weird movie marathon!
We’re just gonna check this one off the list right off the bat.
Time travel, other dimensions, a giant rabbit, Jake Gyllenhaal, this film’s got it all. Set in U.S.A suburbia the movie follows Donnie (Gyllenhaal) through a journey of self discovery, growing up, time travel and a giant talking rabbit named Frank. Considering just how popular this movie still is seventeen years after its release, it deserves a watch just to check it off your list.
This one flew under a lot of people’s radar. Set in a dystopian future that can only be described as a tinder takeover, the film stars Colin Farrell who plays a single man in a world where that is not an option. All single adults are sent off to a couples retreat to meet the love of their lives, if you don’t then you’re turned into an animal of your choosing.
It’s a strange, hilarious and bizarre film that might leave you wondering what on earth you just watched.
Perfume the Story of a Murderer
If you’ve ever taken a film school, you’ve probably seen this one, but it’s still not one that would come on T.V. for a quiet Sunday evening with the whole family.
Meet Jean-Baptiste, a young man in 18th century France who has an uncanny ability to smell. He becomes obsessed with finding the perfect aroma, going as far as murder to get it.
While it sounds fine and dandy on the outside, the strangeness of the film comes from the way it portrays the sense of smell on screen, with imagery that can be described as both captivating and violating it’s a one of a kind film…not to mention the ending is something else entirely.
Under the Skin
The less said about this movie before going in the better so I’ll keep it brief. Scarlett Johansson plays a mysterious American woman in Scotland who seduces men into a fatal mating … dance (I guess you could call it that; look man I don’t know it’s weird, but you’ll know it when you see it.) Filled with stunning and terrifying visuals that Stranger Things ripped right off the screen, and real life people who were unaware they were being filmed.
A retelling of man’s fear of women and/or a critique on gender roles Under the Skin is a movie you won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Also be aware this is quite the graphic film in terms of nudity, so probably best not to watch this one with your parents.
Don’t worry, it’s about a tire! 2010 was quite a year, the 2000s had just wrapped up, Netflix binging was still a relatively new thing and it was the first time as a culture we went on a hunt for the weirdest movies out there. Now that streaming on Netflix is a thing there’s no more awkward judgement between me and the guy working at Blockbuster, I was free to pick the weirdest movies ever! However, just like Icarus, I abused this new power and flew a little too close to the sun.
A friend and I had a day off from class and we decided to watch Rubber.
Now if you haven’t heard of this one, I’m just going to rattle off the official synopsis, just so you don’t claim I’m making this up:
“Rubber is a 2010 English-language French independent black comedy fantasy horror film about a tire that comes to life and kills people with its psychic powers.”
Need I say more? Please, do yourself a favour and just watch it.
They might not be the most popular movies, but this list will definitely give you a movie marathon like none other.
