Lando Lands a Movie?

With Solo: A Star Wars Story being part of Disney and Lucasfilm’s latest string in popular movies the next movie rumored to join the Star Wars pantheon seems to be Lando.

While I’m not a fan of these Star Wars spin offs so far, I think this could be the breath of fresh air Lucasfilm needs.

Now a Lando movie is all speculation at this point, so we shouldn’t get our hopes up and take this with a grain of salt.

JUST KIDDING! HERE ARE ALL THE REASONS A LANDO FILM NEEDS TO HAPPEN RIGHT NOW!

DONALD GLOVER IS THE MOST CHARMING ACTOR ALIVE

If anyone here read my commentary on my Solo: A Star Wars Story you may remember I wasn’t super jazzed for the film, but one thing I was really looking forward to was Donald Glover as Lando.

Not only does he just exude charm and swagger, but it might actually be impossible to dislike the guy. He’s a name people are excited for.

LANDO ISN’T AS ICONIC AS HAN SOLO

Now let me be clear, I’m not saying Lando isn’t iconic; Billy Dee Williams’s original performance has an irreplaceable charm to it (you try pulling off a cape)…. he’s just not as iconic as Han Solo.

Now I’m guessing this is why Lucasfilm wanted to go after a Han Solo movie in the first place, he’s the most beloved character in the series by far (fight me.) But what was seen as a sure fire hit soon backfired when everyone collectively asked: “Why?”

After all the reason Solo became so beloved isn’t just because of Harrison Ford’s perfect portrayal, but because we’ve seen him grow and evolve over the course of four movies; we’ve already seen everything we needed to know.

Lando however has only appeared in two movies and not much is known about him, he’s an easier character to recast and since his only real ties to the Star Wars galaxy is Han there’s more of a world you can build around him.

THERE’S MORE TO PLAY WITH

When we’re first introduced to Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back Han tells us that he’s a card player and gambler. When we meet him though Han laughs calling him “A respectable businessman.” When we meet him he’s already completed an unseen character arch, so what was Lando the scoundrel like?

So far Donald Glover’s portrayal is a step in the right direction, but in his own movie he could really shine.

LANDO CAN TAKE RISKS

One of the downfalls with the Solo movie is you get the sense Lucasfilm didn’t want to take any risks with the titular character. With Lando you can take those risks. Lando is through and through a product of the 70s (and yes I know Empire came out in the 80’s) everything about him screams key-party-swinger. In his own film you could really lean into that and make the film a groovy throwback flick.

A Lando film could be Lucasfilm’s chance to explore new territories and really do something crazy and fun.

… Or Lucasfilm can stop pretending to give us creative Star Wars movies and admit that the “Star Wars Anthology” series are just filler films.
