Their Finest is a love letter to story and acts as a reminder to filmmakers everywhere to be innovative dreamers even in the midst of the chaos of set life and more.
Set during World War 2, the film follows England’s Department of Information’s film department as they try to create a movie that will inspire the troops, encourage those left behind and challenge America to get involved in the war. If you’re a filmmaker, this is a must see. The creative thinking of the characters as they plot a screenplay, work with unruly actors, and balance their home life with their workload is something we can all relate with but even more their passion for film will reignite your passion for film.
There’s one scene in particular, where the screenwriter is busy typing away on his typewriter, while bombs are tearing his city apart. Instead of running from the room to find a safe place to weather the ‘storm’, he simply turns up his music, to drown out the sirens and explosions. Something about that moment sends chills down my spin. It is a reminder of why we make movies. To tell stories that leave an impact. Not just the next big blockbusters, but something of worth that will hopefully bring inspiration to those who watch it.
The clip below is the next best scene. It shows them in action, working together as a community of dreamers to tell a story that matters.
