If you’re looking to watch something new on your popular movies list, then I’d suggest If Beale Street Could Talk. The film recently won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. A film utterly complex, beautiful and a masterpiece of cinematic poetry. If you haven’t heard of the film yet, start off by watching the trailer.
If Beale Street Could Talk is based on the 1974 novel written by James Baldwin. Barry Jenkins the director of the film has kept James’ story well in line with the book. This is Barry’s third feature film and his follow up from the award winning film Moonlight. Set in the early 1970’s, the story focuses on Tish and Fonny, good childhood friends that later develop an inseparable bond. When Tish and Fonny are expecting their first child and dreaming of building a future together, Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit, and their plans are derailed.
James wrote a moving story of love, family and the harsh realities of injustice. It’s not your average true love story that’s smooth sailing, but a tragic romance embracing the hardships of persecution and dealing with racial tension.
It is a must see film and the soundtrack melts in perfectly with the storytelling. It stars Regina King, Stephan James, Kiki Layne and Dave Franco. These actors nailed their performances and really made the story come to life.
