The Science Behind Netflix’s Thumbnail Algorithm

You and your friends may both reside within the Netflix community, but the thumbnails displayed on your account vastly differ from theirs.

It’s not exactly a secret Netflix uses all sorts of algorithms to customise each of our different profiles but this video explains the science behind it and how much work actually goes into making our Netflix experiences as personal as possible.

Their technique is highly effective as you may have already figured out by now you’re more likely to watch something based off of a particular screenshot that appeals to your own personal tastes.

I’ve noticed this myself, and honestly it’s guided me into watching some hidden gems.

On the other hand I can see it’s all a giant marketing scheme by Netflix, but since I pay for the service, I’d only expect them to bend over backwards to meet my every need while being manipulated into watching more content. It’s a weird partnership that seems to work.

Netflix knows how to steer its audience into watching more and more popular movies and TV shows, but it’s also something we as a ‘binge-watching’ society easily accept.
