We all look for inspiration, the one thing I think inspires us the most is movies. I mean, they inspire us to write stories, learn new things, challenge us and quote our favorite lines. Without them, the world would be pretty boring. Movies have always been the biggest inspiration in my life, but more importantly they taught me to dream big and to pursue acting.
For some people it could have been a famous actor that made them want to pursue acting or giving a speech at the oscars, but for me, it was movies. Here’s a list of films that made me stand in front of a mirror for hours reenacting scenes:
The Wizard Of Oz (1939)
One of the classics! The first time I watched this all I wanted to do was to dive through my TV and land into their world. If only that could happen! It also made me want to wear socks with my shoes, yes it had quite the impact. The Wizard Of Oz was the first film that really got me thinking about being in a musical, I was hooked! All the actors inspired me by their performances, so much so I tried to mimic Dorothy’s accent. It wasn’t just the acting, it was the story. It told me facing your fears was better than running away from them and true friendship was and still is really important. That’s when I decided this was the type of story I wanted to act in.
Okay, the first time I watched this film I was a balling mess and it took me a couple days to recover from Jack’s death. Talk about major movie withdrawals. Okay and maybe it was because I was crushing a lot on Leo, but that’s beside the point. Both Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet are brilliant actors, it doesn’t matter how many times I watch this film I still admire their work. After watching countless behind the scenes videos of Titanic it opened my eyes to see the job of an actor and how things work on a set. The fact it was based on true events made me think of how spectacular it would be to act on a film based on actual people and events, even though the film is more of a love story it still made me want to act in something disastrous and challenging. This film definitely impacted me to learn more about the industry and what actors actually do.
A Walk To Remember (2002)
Call me corney, but I think this is one of the sweetest romance films ever! Nicholas Sparks knows how to capture hearts! It wasn’t your over the top glamorous movie with the perfect happy ending, but a genuine and real love story, the type I wanted to be in. This movie was the reason I always wanted to act in a sad love story, and the reason why I’d be in the mirror for hours pretending I was jamie Sullivan singing Only Hope.
Reading the book and watching the book come to live was magical! It’s a film I could watch over and over again and still get something out of every time. It triggered my acting passions and ignited something in me no other movie did. Everything from the set design, costumes, characters and story made me want to somehow be involved in something like it and seriously think about studying acting so I could pursue a job in the industry. And it even inspired me to learn how to do a British accent just in case I would need it for a character or an audition.
The Hunger Games (2012)
If I could be one person for the day, it would be Katniss Everdeen. Out of all the films I’ve listed The Hunger Games is the one to blame for my pursuit of acting. This was the film I spent most of my spare time quoting lines, pretending to be Katniss Everdeen in interviews and styling my wardrobe like hers. Yes, I even bought a brown leather jacket like hers. This was the type cast I wanted, and if anyone ever said, ‘What movie/movies would you want to be in?’ It would be The Hunger Games (all of them). Katniss is a role model, she’s strong, capable and determined, and it made me realise those characteristics is what I would love to play as a character. The Hunger Games is a film mixed with drama, chaos, love, and loss and made me want to pursue roles and films that have a similar story. After watching all the behind the scenes, I was obsessed with film and the film industry, it made me recognise I wouldn’t want to pursue any other job except acting.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
A musical and swinging acrobats!? Well, count me in! When I saw this film, I was in complete awe. The opening song reminded me of why I wanted to be an actor, and it was because movies give people so much inspiration and wonder. Everything about this film made me want to audition for a musical on Broadway. For me that’s huge! But it gave me so much inspiration to sing more, dance more and become a better actor. All the actors rehearsed so many times, trained so hard and made me not only want to become a good actor but a determined actor. Till this day I still listen to the soundtrack because it’s amazing and every time I watch the film it inspires me to audition and find whatever acting jobs I can.
Movies have such an essence about them, the way they make me feel is the reason why I want to keep pursuing acting. That one day my character or whatever film I’m in can inspire people, that’s the driving force. Without movies, I don’t know where my inspiration for acting would be.
