Ever wanted to know how the directors of today’s popular movies got to be where they are? Well, as this short clip points out, they observed the directors on this list, stole their techniques, and built on the shoulders of giants.

This video stands above other listicles I’ve watched because of its qualitative presentation.

The pacing of the video is enjoyable, the clips they present flow well, and the points are refreshingly thought-out. Compared to other listicle videos, the points they bring up don’t just focus on the prestige or awards each director has amassed, but they examine the impact each director’s career had on the film world.

I also enjoyed the narration. I like how he listed many different directors who could’ve taken each spot. It made me want to look up those directors. There were so many names I hadn’t heard before.

The takeaway from the video: Steal from the greats. This is what modern directors have done, and we can do the same. Do the same and you’ll learn how to make movies.
