5 Popular Musicals Being Made Into Films

Get ready for an exciting year full of popular musicals getting turned into, hopefully, popular movies! Which ones you ask? Among those being made into films are Wicked, Cats and of course a few Disney remakes.

Yes, you’re reading this correctly. This epic musical originally brought to us by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth will be gracing our screens in 2021. The cast is still to be announced, but director, Stephen Daldry, who’s known for Billy Elliot (and who was just announced as director for an untitled Star Wars story about Obi-Wan), will be directing Wicked.

  1. CATS

When you throw names like Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Taylor Swift, and Jason Derulo, you know that you’re in for a good time. It’s being directed by Les Misérables director Tom Hooper. It’s also been rumoured Andrew Lloyd Webber has written a new song for the film, which will be sung by kitten Victoria. The film is set to release just in time for Christmas this year.

Director Steven Spielberg is set to direct newcomer Rachel Zegler and Baby Driver star, Ansel Elgort in this new adaptation of the classic story of forbidden love and rivalry. But perhaps one of the biggest draws is that Rita Moreno will be playing Valentina, who is rumoured to be an expanded and re-imagined version of Doc, the owner of the store where Tony works. I had no idea Elgort could sing, but after finding a couple of clips of his YouTube music channel, and watching a few of Zegler’s too, I cannot wait for this new version.

An animated version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical was announced at CinemaCon in 2017 and not much more has been released about the movie. BUT it’s rumoured Elton John may be attached to the film, and even writing a few new songs for it..

The popular musical based on Roald Dahl’s novel is going to grace our screens again in another adaptation. Not much has been released about this film, but Director Matthew Warchus and writer Dennis Kelly are currently attached to it. Tim Minchin, who wrote the music and lyrics for Matilda the Musical, has also been rumoured to be attached to it as well. But with the little news on the production, who knows when we’ll actually see this one.Hopefully, soon. There are many other honourable musical mentions: Aladdin, The Lion King, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, The Colour Purple, Little Shop Of Horrors, Guys & Dolls, and Oliver! All of which are already set to release this year or in the works. It’s a great time for the musical loving community, which one are you most excited for?

Hard to imagine Cats with that cast. LOL Should be a hoot. Looking forward to seeing what they do with West Side Story though. One of my favourite musicals of all time. And Wicked should be great.
