What’s Your New Avengers Draft?

Avengers Endgame will no doubt go down in history as one of the most popular movies of all time. The film capped off eleven years of storytelling, gave us some tearful goodbyes and opened up a world of new possibilities, some of which, we saw at Comic-Con this year.

One thing that was noticeably absent was the inclusion of a new Avengers or team-up movie. And if you think that’s because the Avengers are done then you’ve got another thing coming because as long as Disney’s making some cash on these movies we’re not slowing down.

It begs the question though, when the Avengers come back, who will be on the team? Well, I have a few guesses—I present to you my draft for the new Avengers roster.

For this, I’ve done more than just pick my favourite heroes, but done my best to try and think of different power sets, leadership skills, intelligence, and an X factor (a new addition that can lend new stories to the team.)

I should also say I’m only using existing/officially announced characters from Marvel’s repertoire.

The Leader: All-New Captain America

This one’s a bit of a given, but The Avengers will always need a Captain America, he’s the symbol that embodies what the team stands for, not a flag, but that sentiment of “I don’t like bullies.”

Sam Wilson’s all-new Captain America brings a lot to the team, not only is Sam a born leader, but how will the public react to a new Cap? We already see slightly mixed feelings in the real world when it comes to Steve’s replacement, how would a fictional world react, how would his teammates? No doubt we’ll see some of this in the upcoming The Falcon and Winter Solider show on Disney plus, but seeing how he leads a superhero team is something I’d be really excited for.

The Muscle: Valkyrie

We won’t know what state Thor will be in by the time his upcoming movie Love and Thunder wraps up, but Valkyrie has set up New Asgard on earth making her the perfect pick for the teams new Asgardian. And Tessa Tompson’s scene-stealing performance in Ragnarok would be amazing in an ensemble cast.

Recon: Ant-Man

With Black Widow’s heartbreaking demise in Endgame, the team needs a new spy character, someone who can slip under the radar. The reason I picked Ant-Man over Hawkeye, orMaria Hill, is because on top of his ability to shrink down to the size of an ant, I think it would be really fun to see Scott have to learn to be a spy. It’s a role that’s completely within his range of powers, but completely out of his comfort zone, which would make a pretty good arc.

The Master and Apprentice: Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch

Every campaign needs a mage and why settle for one when you could have two?

It looks like Marvel wants to sell these two as a package deal and I’m so down for it. It looks like Wanda is going to tap more into her supernatural side in the future and I think putting Strange in a teaching role is really fun to explore, and seeing Wanda’s full potential on screen would be pretty great.

Not to mention using their teacher-student dynamic could be the new heart of the team.

The Brawler: Luke Cage

Okay look, there’s no way this one’s going to happen, but a guy can dream right? While we already have an Asgardian warrior and a man who can grow past 60ft it might sound a bit weird to include a brawler. But here’s the thing we need —a team member who will be able to do some ground rescue: jump into a burning building or save a family held hostage by whatever threat is attacking while the big players go after the giant space squid.

He’s also a good way to keep the team grounded. As much as I love these movies, I’ve always wanted to see the team interact with the public a bit more and Cage is a perfect choice to bring that to the table. He lives in Harlem, it’s a different world than the upstate Avengers complex. I think it would be great to see the Avengers show up to a city school, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or find some way to use their celebrity to help people around them when the sky isn’t crashing down.

The Super Genius: Shuri

I love Shuri, she’s such a fun character and Letitia Wright is so charming to watch and as we saw in Infinity War she can hold her own with the other heroes. In my ideal Avengers movie she would want to start taking a more proactive hero role and build her own suit? We need someone who can think through problems with the speed of Tony Stark and can build gadgets with the speed of Rocket Racoon. She’s a perfect candidate and since she’s the newest member she’d be a great point of view character and her conflict could be trying to prove herself to her brother.

The Financial Backer/Chairman: T’Challa

While I have Sam Wilson leads the team, the Avengers are gonna need some cash and someone who can help with the diplomatic front. T’Challa is a bit busy leading his own country to be a full time member, but of course he’d still show up for the fight. He’s also a good way to keep the team out of government jurisdiction by having a neutral country fund the team. Could build up some good tension between the team and General Ross.

The Wildcard: Blade

There’s not a whole lot I can say about Mahershalla Ali’s Blade, but this lends a really interesting supernatural element to the team (and yeah there’s Doctor Strange, but he’s more mystical realms and dimensions) with Blade we can have Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fight vampires! He’s also a bit more brutal of a character than a lot of the past members, it could be interesting to see how the rest of the team approves of his methods.

And that’s my list, what do you think? Is it as creative and innovative as the original roster, and what’s your pick?
