Oozing inspirational lines and eat-your-heart-out cinematography, Terrence Malick’s new film, A Hidden Life is the first thing I want to see this December. The trailer gave me chills and near had me in tears but what struck me the most was how innovative it looks.
The film, which is inspired by true events, follows an Austrian farmer, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazi’s because it went against his faith. With sweeping shots and raw performances by a relatively unknown cast, I’m excited to see a film with a main character like Franz. There have been countless films about this unfortunate time in our world history, but never have I seen one with this type of hero. Someone who defies a nation for his convictions and does so with a quiet strength. Challenging not only the world he lived in but now our generation too. The below 17 words were super convicting and that’s only the trailer!? I can only imagine how many other powerful and provoking moments there will be in the film.
‘If God gives us free will, we’re responsible for what we do or what we fail to do.” – Franz
Malick has been a hit or miss with me in the past, mostly because I have a hard time seeing the story in some of his films, but this one looks fleshed out and intriguing, telling a solid emotional journey.
Take a look at the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments below. Do you think it’s going to be an amazing flick? What are some of your favourite shots? And does it give you inspiration for your next film or challenge your way of thinking?
I’ll get us started, I think A Hidden Life will be the most innovative film in 2019.
