If you want your next music video to be powerful and innovative, why not make it into a short film. Adding a stronger dynamic of story can enhance and strengthen the message of your song and make it more memorable too.
Yes, there are elements of story within most music videos, but only a few that really make it a short film. But I’m telling you, it’s worth it.
Elderbrook & Rudimentary turned their song “Something About You” into a dynamic and meaningful short film and it freaking blew me away. It’s a simple story of how courage and support in times of struggle can bring a huge impact on those hurting. And it’s the perfect backdrop to showcase the depth of this song.
It’s beautifully shot, even the cinematography adds to the story, showing through the choice of movements the importance of supporting one another. And the acting and dancing is simple yet profound. It starts with soft and tentative steps and builds in the strength that comes when we’re vulnerable and supported. Gah! I could watch it over and over again and still find something new.
What really jumps out to me is that I don’t ever want to just listen to this song, I want to watch the short film too. And if I’m in a place where I can’t watch it, I’ll think about it while the song’s playing. Ultimately it’ll be a reminder for me to keep being courageous with the short films I write and produce. And it gives me hope that there are still innovative and simple stories to be told that can impact the broader community.
