Production Design is integral in telling good stories, and the more creative it is, the better. This clip from YouTube channel, StudioBinder, gives a unique look at the power of production design to tell a story by exploring how it uses objects, colors, etc. in these three crucial areas:

  1. Mood
  2. Character
  3. Themes

Everything you see within the frame of a film should be adding and aiding to the story of the movie. The examples StudioBinder uses are inspiring and eye-opening. One of my favourite examples they use came from the original Jurassic Park and a scene towards the end of the film. Dr. Grant, Dr. Sattler, and Hammond’s grandkids are crawling through the ceiling, when Spielberg cuts to a shot of a velociraptor. Have you ever really paid much attention to the weird lighting on it? What StudioBinder has to say about what is seen and how it adds to the story made me want to get out of my chair and go and make another movie ASAP.

Full of great filmmaking advice, innovative ways to aid story, and loads of inspiration, what more can I say — just watch it!
