Arrested Development is one of the most complex and creative TV shows ever made.
With its witty humour, running gags, misdirection and foreshadowed events spanning several seasons it’s bound to have you in hysterics immediately followed by a head tilt and squinty eyes. Even after watching it through a second and even a third time you’ll likely pick up on details you missed originally.
Subtext is something every writer pursues to master, and this story is chock full, despite the use of a narrator spelling everything out for you.
For writers and independent filmmakers looking to nail their dialogue and/or story structure then I would recommend taking a watch of this video essay on ‘How Arrested Development does running gags’.
