I think we often forget how important a villain is in a story. Our minds are always on the heroes of the stories; which is completely understandable. But I truly believe that a great villain plays a part in how great the hero of the story will be.
A true antagonist recognizes their adversary’s weaknesses and then uses that to their advantage. In many films I have left the theatre disappointed for the sole reason of the villain falling short of my expectations. I’m not saying that every bad guy needs to be set on world domination.. But I do think it is important to thoroughly develop an evil character so that buying a bag of peanuts becomes a suspenseful scene (hint, hint).
I have put together a list of my top 5 favorite villains of all time. This list is completely biased, but I’m willing to bet many people would agree with my choices. Share your top 5 villains in the comments and let us know what you think!
