The Good, The Bad and The Promising: Netflix’s IO

Welcome back to another innovative edition of The Good, The Bad and The Promising! Where we take a look at new movie trailers and talk about how we felt and what kind of impact the movie will have. This week’s edition: Netflix’s post apocalyptic film IO.

Set in a future where the earth has become toxic two strangers must make their way across the country to board the last shuttle to Jupiter’s moon Io, humanity’s new home.

THE GOOD

The cast is great, I’m a big fan of both Margaret Qualley and Anthony Mackie so that’s a plus for me. Unfortunately, that’s about the only positive note I have for this trailer.

THE BAD

Where to start… Nothing about this movie seems very new or catches my interest. The whole thing feels like it’s trying to be this artsy character piece at the expense of the story. A quick IMDB search shows that there are only three characters in the film, and it looks like the third is contained only to news broadcasts. Listen, I’m not saying you can’t make a compelling film with two characters, but you better have a really good reason for it. And considering I’m already a little bored with the concept that’s been done to death, I’m not very hopeful.

THE PROMISING

Netflix is going to have some very stiff competition, very soon with Disney’s new Disney Plus and a million other streaming platforms that are about to roll out. We’re at the calm before the streaming wars start. and to be honest, Netflix doesn’t have the luxury of putting out these kinds of films anymore.

Still, I could be wrong, but what do you think? Creative masterpiece, or flat dud?
