It’s amazing to see how many different ways creatives can tell a story, there’s never just one way of going about it. If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend watching a short film called, A Love Story. A film by Anushka Naanayakkara, produced by the National Film and Television School. The creators took initiative to create something new and fresh in order to serve their story, and it works wonderfully.
A Love Story is a beautiful film completely made by yarn puppets, it takes you on a journey through their unique world of materials and wool, and centers around two floating beings that soon become intertwined by affection, until an unpleasant force forms and interferes with their bond. What I love about this film is that it’s not a happily ever after story but a story about love that was once beautiful.
It’s a creative portrayal of what real life relationships can look and feel like, showing us that not all relationships are perfect and issues like anxiety, depression and other toxicities can have harmful effects on those we love. This short film isn’t afraid to show a vulnerable side to what relationships can look like, the way they used wool to convey connection and separation was an incredibly artistic way to make the story even more relatable.
The use of colour, animation and music all have its purpose to serve to the story, everything about it is captivating and sympathetic. It’s a BAFTA-winning short film and is truly a creative masterpiece you need to see.
